New York City Poker clubs bustedSubmitted by Patrick Grote on Tue, 05/31/2005 - 2:40pm.
n business you always look for an edge, but sometimes that edge can blur the ethical line. IN the case of the New York City poker clubs, they killed the lines. In New York it's illegal to gamble. The law is pretty specific and a great run down of the gambling law in New York can be found on Riding the F Train. The funny thing about these New York City poker clubs is that they attempted to skirt the law by renting table space: Both clubs operated by generating a profit from each game, police said. Typically, a buzzer would go off every half hour and the dealers would switch, signifying that players would have to pay either $4 or $5 to continue holding their seat. In each place, there were about 12 tables seating 10 per table. So technically the house wasn't taking a cut of the profits, but renting table space. Ethically horrible, legally unproven.
