Lotus Notes beings groupware to the masses

The top 25 technology review continues with number 22, Lotus Notes.

Lotus Notes was the first enterprise scalable groupware product. Groupware is a fancy way of saying software that helps people work together.

When Lotus Notes was introduced they didn't do a very good job of explaining the function. Add to this that it was very expensive, and not too many companies adopted it as an internal platform. Instead, companies decided to supplement their internal email products with add on software.

Lotus had a year or so of Notes on its own before IBM bought Lotus. After IBM started to push the product hard in enterprises, companies began to invest in it.

I've used Notes on many occasions and found it to be a very capable program for handling group data.

I can remember when the first came out. Development on Lotus Notes was tough, but you could soldier through it. Nowadays, Lotus Notes development is easier.
