How to deal with late homework assignments

In college you'll be faced with a large chasm from high school. The teachers in college aren't going to accept late assignments, and sometimes you won't even get a real teacher. It's important to have your work done and in on time. Unlike high school, where your teacher has a very close relationship with you, in college you'll be one of a thousand students.

You won't be able to count on personal relationships to get you through.

Now, all hope isn't lost. The number one thing to do is get your homework assignments in on time. There might be times where a delay in turning assignments in is justified (or even if it isn't), and in those times try these tips.

  • Overcommunicate ahead of the deadline. Don't show up the day the assignment is due and plead your case. You're going to know whether you'll be able to complete it on time or not prior to the due date. Email, talk to and/or message your teacher. Make sure they know that your assignment will be late.
  • Clarify the penalty. More than likely you're going to be able to turn it in late, but with a penalty. Make sure you understand that penalty so you can decided whether it's worth it or not.
  • Finish the assignment. Once you get the stay of execution, finish the damn assignment. Teachers hate it when students come back asking for another delay. It's at this point they will begin to think you're jerking them around.

If you find yourself continually late in turning in assignments you need help. Check with someone in the academic support area for help. Most times they can help you find the resources you need to get back on track. Remember, if you fall too far behind you're going to have to drop the class. This is money, and more importantly, time wasted.
