Food is one of those things most college kids don't pay attention to. I'm not going to touch on the nutritional aspects of what you eat, which will be a later topic, but more importantly what to do when you're low on money.
You're going to find yourself in situations where your meal plan isn't available for whatever reason and you're hungry. Yes, you can go with the old standby the 29 cent ramen, but that's not going to do it from a number of aspects. What you need is a gameplan for getting a full meal.
Here are a number of ideas:
- Friends: This is the easiest one, and probably the most satisfying. Mooch off your friends. Most will understand and not say anything, but if you need to explain what's going on. Food is one of the things most people are more than happy to share, especially if they prepared it. Now, this isn't the time to become Miss Picky Eater, and it's definitely not the time to critique the food. You're accepting free food at a time you need it.
- Relatives: You might end up less than an hour from extended family members, so it's always a good time to drop by and visit. Again, people usually are receptive and will offer you a little something to eat. Now is not the time to bring up awkward memories or ramble on about yourself. Focus on them.
- Gift cards: Suprisingly, your generation finds itself awash in free money in the form of gift cards. Sometimes you'll have a Wal-Mart or Target card that has a couple of bucks left that you forgot about. Put it to use. Most Wal-Marts and Targets have food areas, so you can get a good meal for 3 or 4 bucks with vegetables and fruit included. The key here is to keep the old gift cards with very little money on them.
- Emergency stash: Your Mom and I always debate this, but I believe you should overstock your foodstuffs. Knowing this you'll hopefully have a can of tuna or a box of ramen somewhere you can pull out and enjoy.
Remember, this is for those times you find yourself without your normal options. You shouldn't avail yourself of these choices on a regular basis.
