Admitting You're a Geek

I am a geek. I know it's hard to admit sometimes, but you really have to be honest with yourself. I've always thought about starting a series of books called, "You Might Be a Geek If ...", but I am sure Jeff Foxworthy would sue.

I love all things technical and I love learning new things. This leads to what I call "remember whenitis." You know you're in trouble when we're discussing technology and I start off with, "Remember when ..."

My position at work lends itself to many chances to interact with technology and I have been focused on expanding group dynamics through online communication and syndication. What I don't do anymore is administer networks.

Don't get me wrong, network administration used to be my calling card. There's nothing more satisfying than being in charge of a artificially created life form that supports thousands of people. The power to help them; the power to keep them safe. Alas, my position has evolved to the point where I am simply not needed in network administration.

It's hard to come to terms with that sometimes. The heart pounding feeling you get from ensuring policies are correct. The rush you get when a dead server springs to life. The roller coaster of emotion you feel when attempting to fix a network communications issue.

While other members of my team have fun actually typing in the commands that control the network or clicking the options to make something live, I have to be happy watching them and running these things at home. And let me tell you about my home network ...
