The Wall Street Journal reports that the Olympic TV rights are up for bid soon. The American rights to the games mean the most in terms of prestige and profit to the Olympic Committees. The games that are going to bid are the 2014 and 2016 Olympic Games.
In the past the Olympic games were almost a guarantee of profit to those that won the bid, but nowadays, not so much.
Why the Olympic TV broadcasts suck:
Tape delay – In the age of the internet there is no reason to delay broadcasting the events that draw the biggest crowds.
Lack of online streaming – You cannot stream every event even though they are being covered. This makes no sense. Regardless of whether the broadcast is free or not, there should be an option to view them.
Survive any disaster in your own home. Prepare now. A must for the coming problems in the world!Geographic focus – Again, in the internet age there is no reason to limit the broadcasts to certain countries.
The Olympics will continue to make money for broadcasters, but they will need to be more proactive in getting viewers. As Chris LaPlaca of ESPN said, “We’ve got a lot of platforms and we plan to use all of them.”
