Yesterday, I spoke a little about the actual process of migrating from Drupal to WordPress. Today, I thought it best to discuss a few reasons why I went with WordPress instead of moving to the latest version of Drupal.
As I noted, the upgrade path from Drupal 4.x to the latest version was cumbersome and not easy at all. This was a relief, I think, since it opened up other options for me. I knew I would be primarily focused on a manual process, so the back end choice became open and free.
I seriously only considered a handful of platforms, but I knew what I wanted:
- Something easy to install
- Something easy to upgrade
- Something easy to integrate Adsense into
Notice a pattern?
Easy was a key need for me and WordPress hasn’t disappointed.
These are the things I’ve found to be surprisingly easy about WordPress:
Upgrading WordPress. As soon as I started the migration process, a new version of WordPress was released. Oh, no. Well, my fears were overblown. The upgrade was as simple as telling it to upgrade, entering my FTP password and watching. It did it all.
Upgrading Plugins. I use a number of Plugins, so when new versions come out I was worried about having to download them, FTP them, install them, try them and move on. WordPress handles all this for you. You can even deactivate a plugin if things go wrong.
Scheduling Posts: My week is very busy, so I tend to cluster creating my posts, but then spread them out across a week. For instance, I wrote this post on Saturday. WordPress makes this simple without cron configuration as was required in Drupal.
WordPress became my blogging platform of choice due to the fact it is so easy. Very easy.
