In previous years and generations, the media we consume has come in different formats. For instance, let’s look at audio:
- Wax cylinder
- Vinyl LPs
- 8 Track Tape
- Cassette Tape
- Compact Disc
Each successive generation offered something better, most people would think, than the last. Now, let’s look at video:
- VHS
- DVD
After the Compact Disc and DVD, the media companies have tried to move the ball forward, but what people bought at that point is good enough for most people. Sure, some people swear Blu-ray is much better, but most cannot tell the difference.
I find it funny that a ton of people are enjoying the just good enough format of streaming at this point. The Guardian has an article about the decrease in DVD sales in the United States. They say:
DVD sales plunged 20% in the US in the first quarter of 2011, with Hollywood studios blaming the timing of Easter and a glut of blockbuster releases in the same period last year for the $500m (£303m) year-on-year revenue slump.
Survive any disaster in your own home. Prepare now. A must for the coming problems in the world! The experts quoted in the article don’t seem to understand why the DVD sales figures are headed down:
Most people have replaced their VHS collections – If they were going to upgrade, they already have.
More people find streaming perfectly acceptable – No need to buy a physical disc if you can stream.
The DVD format will be around for a while, but the days of people wholesale upgrading their collections is over.
