Computer piracy is the copying of something you don’t own to give to someone else. I am sure there is a more granular explanation, but that is what I consider piracy. To me, piracy is not place or time shifting something you own. For instance, I don’t have any problems ripping a DVD for use on my iPad before a trip.
I have never understood why media companies try to force people to maintain archaic distributions models. To this day I maintain the music industry missed out on billions of dollars by not buying Napster when it started. They could have controlled pretty much all online distribution of their licensed music. Now, though, they have let Apple take over.
Survive any disaster in your own home. Prepare now. A must for the coming problems in the world!Anyway, a great article appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald discussing piracy. The points made include:
- Actual piracy estimation never works.
- There is no way to forecast piracy rates.
- Piracy rates are always inflated.
The problem with this is that the industry always shoots itself when it releases reports like this. It drives a wedge between the industry and customers.
