What am I doing this weekend

At work I typically ask everyone on the team what plans they have for the weekend on Friday. Some of the time people have specific plans, but most of the time it boils down to a little of this and a little of that.

What I have noticed in my time doing this is a few observation of human nature:

1) Most people don’t ask in return: It seems like a pretty simple, polite thing to do, but most people I ask never return the question. I think it has to do with reporting structure, but still.

Survive any disaster in your own home. Prepare now. A must for the coming problems in the world!

2) But those that do, honestly want to know: The people that do ask in return are honestly interested in what you’re doing over the weekend. Just as I will circle back on Monday to find out how people’s weekends went, they do, too. There is some sort of leap made when you do something to be polite versus genuine interest.

3) People appreciate your interest: I’ve found that everyone appreciates being asked, even if they aren’t doing anything.

4) People appreciate your attention: If someone has specific plans I ask more about them. I’m curious and also interested, but this seems to energize people. You would be amazed at the conversations and actions taken after discussing something like a one day trip out of town.

5) Doing nothing special is the norm: It is for me, as well as my teammates.

It is interesting the observations you can make and interactions that unfold by asking a simple question.
