St. Louis is odd in that we don’t have any true national grocery chains. We have three regional ones that dominate the local scene. Don’t get me wrong, we also have Super Walmart and Aldi, but they aren’t really traditional grocery stores. We don’t have a Kroger or Safeway type of stores.
This is good and bad. Good in that we get to really see price fights, bad in that there is a lower push for innovation. I mean, when your local chain trumpets new TV ads, well, there is a problem.
We have three chains in the St. Louis area:
Dierbergs is the high end store and they have done a very good job of bringing cooking lessons and higher end catering to the market.
Survive any disaster in your own home. Prepare now. A must for the coming problems in the world!Schnucks is the middle bird and they have done a good job integrating a restaurant atmosphere in the newer stores and focusing on service.
Shop N Save is the bargain chain and haven’t really done anything to set themselves apart.
Would you believe that none of the local chains have a reward or membership program? That none of them offer delivery of any kind past flowers? Amazing.
Their websites are a few years behind. There is no notification of new ads and Shop N Save still features scrolling text. Awesome.
Dierbergs has a Firefox Untrusted Error when you go to subscribe to their newsletters. Shop N Save is happy to give you an Apache error is you go to their site without a WWW. Super.
Increased competition can only help the local St. Louis area.
