Jerry William McDonald went camping, got stuck and died 68 days later. He kept a calendar of the days he was stuck and was only four miles from help. Stunning.
Many people on the internet were quick to ridicule him for not leaving his truck, but every survival person will tell you your chances are better to stay with your car. It is sad how quickly people forget the story of James Kim.
James was stuck in a similar situation with his wife and two kids, but decided to head out for help. His family was discovered and rescued with the vehicle, while James fell victim to the elements and died.
What can you learn from this:
- Sometimes conventional wisdom doesn’t work out. At some time Mr. McDonald should have considered leaving.
- Be prepared the best you can. Mr. McDonald had fuel, but no cell phone. He had warm clothes, but no food.
