Newsonomics has a list of six things Seth Godin says news publishers need to focus on. Ideas that can help them survive and flourish.
They were interesting. Here is the list and my comments:
Sell silver, not paper – This is about understanding what you sell versus what you do. An excellent point that sometimes people forget. While you may produce one product you are selling something entirely different to your customers whether it be style, convenience, etc.
Treat News ADD – You only have a limited amount of attention from readers, viewers or listeners. You have to make an impression when you capture their attention. A good point and one I think anyone selling anything needs to recognize. Even if the sale isn’t made that visit, you can build a lasting opportunity.
Turn strangers into friends: Any interaction is an opportunity to grow your business. If someone comes to your site and buys something, extend a hand. Make sure they know you appreciate their efforts and that you want to grow the relationship.
Let others bring good things to life – This specifically talks about GE sponsoring a book, which is where the good things to life comes from. The bottom line is that companies are now looking to sponsor whole products, just not bits and pieces.
Don’t let the trucks drive you into oblivion – You no longer need trucks and shouldn’t look at them as an artificial limit. This is specifically the case with newspaper companies. I concur, but would also look at the trucks as an asset that can be used in other areas.
There’s no whining in publishing – There is no whining anywhere. If you look around and you’re still alive, hit it.
Seth is a master marketer and his books always spur people into thought.
