A long time ago I quit trying to figure out the Google algorithms for search. Believe me, I was over at Webmaster World daily looking for trends and even in on the naming of new index changes when they happened monthly. These days I don’t focus on it, because you’ll go nuts trying to figure out Google.
The biggest thing I worry about nowdays is someone copying my site word for word. The internet is built on taking pieces and parts, linking and other sharing metaphors. It’s uncool to copy completely and post as your own. This is where scraping comes into play.
Scraping is when someone copies someone else’s site and passes it off as their own. Most of the time the people doing the scraping, scrapers, post adsense ads on the page to try to make a quick buck. In the past, Google didn’t have an issue defining authority for a page; the page that was first. Today, it seems there are more and more issues.
Patrick Jordan recently showed how his site was ripped off to the point where his original site was showing below the scraper sites. The situation was so bad, he had to create a new domain name and move everything over.
How can Google get around this? Usually, a human review would be ok, but Patrick did that and it didn’t help. A tweaking of the algorithm would help, but how does that rule out future scraping of sites? I just don’t know.
What I do know is that if there is a team of folks who can solve it, it is Google.
