Abandoned TVs for everyone

Assume everyone in the United States owns a TV? Sure. I would think they would all own more than one.

The New York Times reports that TV ownership in the United States has dropped for the first time in 20 years. Think about that. For the first time since 1991, TV ownership rates have declined.

The television ownership rate has dropped from 98.9% to 96.7%. This is for total households in the United States.

Without even looking at the article, I would guess the following are the reasons:

The change to digital – I know we didn’t upgrade two TVs in our house.

The transition to using your computer for consuming video – We’ve made this leap.

The economy – The downturn in the economy makes purchasing electronics a luxury. (Still, think about it, regardless of how bad it is 9.6 out of 10 people still have a TV.)

Ok, so I managed to hit all three things.

They put more emphasis on the economy, but I found this to be telling:

Sensitive to its clients’ concerns, Nielsen explains the trend this way in the report: “While Nielsen data demonstrates that consumers are viewing more video content across all platforms — rather than replacing one medium with another — a small subset of younger, urban consumers seem to be going without paid TV subscriptions for the time being. The long-term effects of this are still unclear, as it is undetermined if this is also an economic issue that will see these individuals entering the TV marketplace once they have the means, or the beginning of a larger shift to online viewing.”

Bingo.

Survive any disaster in your own home. Prepare now. A must for the coming problems in the world!

TV programming won’t be going away, just the main device we watch it on.
