Microsoft unveiled their Surface platform early this morning. I don’t think I’ve been more excited about a technology since the internet. It brings a whole new way of interacting with your data that is the next step in the evolution of interfaces.
Popular Mechanics has a great behind the scenes look where they show off the touch screen and some of the data control you can do with it.
The plans are to roll this out to T-Mobile, Sheraton and Harrah’s. Each are good ways of showing of connectivity, guest relations and pleasure, but the real killer application for this is porn.
Microsoft and porn don’t go hand in hand, but if you look at some of the game changing technologies they’ve embraced in the past they’ve all been widely accepted once the porn industry got into them.
CDROMS: The porn industry was the first consumer industry to embrace putting video and large amounts of images on CDROM for personal computer users. Through this came standardization in video usage and access control.
GUI Interface: As an extension of Windows 95, the adult industry moved very quickly to take advantage of the built in, standardized multimedia platform Windows 95 brought.
Internet: Almost all ecommerce on the internet owes its success to the adult industry.
Of course the units aren’t small enough to be adopted for home use yet, but on a commercial scale they could be programmed with interactive, full size adult based themes. Adult kiosks are the natural first step, but I would think a series of environmental concerns would need to be addressed first.
Still, the killer application for this is something that needs to be personal and effective. You aren’t going to get this personal experience standing in the lobby of a hotel, but you could get it in your room.
