What I learned when I cooked Thanksgiving dinner
I volunteered to cook Thanksgiving dinner for the family this year. It's been a long time since I was responsible for making sure a holiday meal was prepared. I think I did ok, but had to ask for help near the end. We ended up being about an hour late for dinner, but that's alright. It was delicious.
Here are the top ten things I've learned about cooking Thanksgiving dinner:
10. Self basting turkeys cannot be brined. Big mistake made when I purchased the wrong type of turkey.
9. Defrosting in the fridge over a series of days is better than doing the old cold water every 30 minutes trick.
8. Quail kabob appetizers are a hit.
7. Bison gets dry very quickly if you don't cook it right.
6. Your 16 year old daughter can whip out some mean sweet potatoes.
5. People prefer to drink from cans and bottles rather than glasses.
4. Using vinegar alone in your dishwasher will remove the water spots from previously clean dishes.
3. It is very hard to make sure all the food is warm at the same time when it's time to eat.
2. People will gravitate to the kitchen to talk.
1. Never let anyone jump ahead of you in the oven line even if it is for rolls.
