What does it take to be the system administrator of the year?

System Administrators are a unqiue lot. I've been one in the past and it requires a ton of dedication and variety in the way you look at things. The cool thing is that there is a contest to pick a System Administrator of the Year.

You need to know that many system administrators toil in anonymity. Sure, you know them when you need something, especially if you lost a file or something, but most most of the time peopleĀ  don't know who makes things tick.

A system administrator does more than just help you out when things go wrong. They also handle the small details that keep your network up and running.

The winner this year did a couple of great things, but what really caught my eye was this:

The word "no" and phrase "I can't" are not in his vocabulary.

That description really codifies what you look for in a system administrator. Our teams have system administrators where this is the case. Although the people that handle those positions are different, the above phrase applies to them.

We hired well for our system administrators and they all deserve to by system administrator of the year.
