Libraries rock. I love libraries and the promise that they bring to people: free information. The problem is that libraries aren’t exactly profit centers. Most need the support of their communities to exist, and distressingly, not many people are interested in supporting libraries today .
Some people say, “We have the internet, what do I need a library for?” Fair point, but not all the information you need is available online. Still, some people will say, “Books. Who reads books anymore?” Another good point, but today’s library is more than just books. It’s a springboard for quenching curious thirsts and a towel of knowledge to dry off with.
In my local community we have an aberration of a library. Our library isn’t supported by the county wide government, but is instead supported by the local citizens. This puts our library in a different line for funds, which means it’s challenged fiscally.
I should mention that our local library is wonderful, albeit smaller than it should be. The people who run it are fantastic, and the services offered are tremendous. Featuring free WiFi, computers and laptops for use, DVDs and CDs, the library is a one stop shop.
Anyway, our library has tried to pass local ballot initiatives to raise money, but they’ve failed. I came across a unique way the Cincinnati library system is raising money … naming rights. Now, that is a smart idea.
