Pepsi One has Changed the Formula – Splenda Instead of Aspartame

Pepsi One is the bastard step brother of Diet Pepsi. It’s been around for several years (since 1998) and is offered to those who don’t like the diet taste of Diet Pepsi. It’s my favorite soda and the formula has changed. What’s happened?

Last month I found myself at a local gas station and I was thirsty. I opened the cooler case and couldn’t find my Pepsi One. I looked all over the familiar design.

Instead of seeing this I saw an all black label and the ominous NEW AND IMPROVED. Ugh.

I bought it, brought it home and tried it. Awful.

According to the Pepsi Press Release on Pepsi One, the reason is to create a full flavor taste. Pepsi One already had that. According to press reports, the change is being made primarily because aspartame breaks down in heat. It also helps that Splenda is being used in everything now.

I wanted more information, so I went to the Pespi One homepage and was redirected to Oneify.com. There I was assaulted with a stupid Flash webisode and the option to learn more about the characters. The site was put together by Geoff McFetridge and makes no sense at all. No product information is available at all.

Evidently I’ve fallen out of the target demographic of ten year olds.
